Why is Art Important?

Art is important because it helps us to express, connect and understand ourselves and others. It helps us to express what words can't. It helps the artist and the viewer find words for what they’re feeling. In a world, filled with pain, beauty and chaos, communication is more than just words. The way art simply makes us feel when we walk into a room, can set the tone for what kind of communication can happen in those four walls.

Art also preserves culture and history. Paintings, sculpture, music, literature, architecture all capture the beliefs and traditions of a people. Events, social, political and natural are all documented through art. Helping future generations understand the past.

Art encourages creativity. Through the mere act of art making, we learn to stretch our imagination, and from it comes innovation, problems solving and skills that helps us in other areas of our lives that go far beyond art.

Art also builds empathy. It allows us to glance into someone else’s world for a moment, and perhaps help us to begin to understand another perspective, culture or viewpoint.

Throughout history, artist have used their work to challenge injustice, raise awareness and encourage social and political change. Art has played a huge role in challenging what isn’t right.

Art is also a method of therapy. It can reduce stress and provide comfort and ease in processing difficult emotions and going through difficult times.

It also enriches our daily lives. From movies to music to fashion, design and public spaces, art adds beauty and meaning and enjoyment to our daily lives.

Art is a reflection of what it means to be human. It helps us to express ourselves and connect with others. It preserves our stories and experiences. It can help us imagine new beginnings.

And that's why Art is Important.
